Achieve a high-end look on your time and your dime.

While we love what we do for people all over the Seattle and Bellingham areas at The Orderly Space, we realize not everyone is able to take advantage of our services. Especially during current times where we are all stuck at home for the vast majority of the time, we are looking for projects to keep us busy. And when you have so much free time on your hands, there is no better time to start editing your life.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite products and tips for getting your home decluttered and organized so that you can make the magic happen all on your own. Decluttering is the key to getting your home organized and we are excited to help unlock this idea for you and open your mind up to a world of possibilities in your home.

Break down your decluttering by room.

You cannot take on this massive project as a whole--it needs to be broken down into small, manageable chunks where you will use your energy to transform the entire space. Make a plan and go room by room--consider doing the rooms where you spend the most of your time so that your decluttering will be a constant sign of accomplishment as you make these major changes to your space.

Remember the secret sauce we talked about before? Just start. Starting is the biggest hurdle you will face, and once you get that momentum going it will be a solid gold investment of your time.

Research has consistently shown that clutter leads to stress.

It is simply not enough to “organize” your home. If you are constantly finding new homes for all the things you own, chances are 1) some of them are not bringing joy to your life and 2) you simply have too many things you do not need.

Having too many items--whether that be clothing, shoes, or artwork--can actually lead to decision fatigue which is never good. As if you need another reason to feel physically drained! So, before you go on your Marie Kondo organizing binge, make sure to take the time you need to properly declutter your home from top to bottom. e

Trying sorting before organizing

It may seem like we are being repetitive on this, but we are just trying to help instill some tips before you conquer your home! Sorting your items before you decide where they go can make a world of difference. It gives you time to see the items in front of you and mentally decide what makes the most sense for you and your space.

For example, your dresser. How you organize it needs to work for you. There are multiple ways you can organize your dresser drawers, whether you fold and stack or use drawer dividers for specific items, sorting everything out ahead of time will help you spatially prepare for where to put each thing.

Assign and contain your items

Once you’ve properly decluttered, sorted, and are ready to put all of your items back, you need to assign them a home and find a way to contain them. Labeling each area of your pantry, dresser, closet, etc. is a great way to make sure your things go back to their homes once you or your family is done using the item. It may take you some time to get used to your new system, but having a home for everything will make your home feel like a paradise instead of a parasite constantly draining your energy.
